DIRTY STORY
Sacramento Premiere!
By John Patrick Shanley
September 22 - October 28

"…appallingly entertaining …one of the liveliest, boldest and - against all odds-funniest studies ever of a subject that even hard-core satirists tend to approach on tip -toe"
-NY Times

"Shanley… can have us both laughing and horrified at the world …"
- NY Observer

From the Artistic Director

Why we love this play:
Sex and politics-what better topics for bold, live theatre?  Shanley is one of the most acclaimed and versatile writers of the modern American theatre and here he is at his most audacious.  It’s political theatre that is hilarious, shocking, and all-too-often, right on the money.  I love being surprised by a play…and this one had me alternatively gasping and laughing out loud.

From the Artistic Director

Why we love this play:
In the hands of director Greg Alexander, and our fearless triumvirate, Eric, Gary, and Tony, last season’s production was the perfect antidote to the traditional holiday fare, striking an hilarious balance between satire and celebration of all things "x-mas." Dinner with Friends
Winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize
Sacramento Premiere!
By Donald Margulies
January 26 – March 2, 2008

"…Margulies writes about relationships with such intelligence and spiky humor that his comedy-drama…becomes something quite wonderful." - Time

"…wry and keenly observed and bathed in the unspoken sorrow that can sneak up on you in middle age…" - NY Times

From the Artistic Director

Why we love this play:
Few plays capture the subtle complexities of marriage with as much humor, compassion and honesty as this Pulitzer winner. The idea that “you never really know what couples are like when they’re alone,” is a fascinating premise for this glimpse into the private lives of two couples.

Gabe and Karen have it all: wonderful careers as food writers, a comfortable Connecticut home, a summer house at Martha’s Vineyard and Tom and Beth, their best friends. For over twelve years the two couples have shared their lives over dinners, vacations and through child rearing. All is well in their worlds until a startling revelation: Tom and Beth’s marriage is ending.

"Bracing
...intensely entertaining...seductive...
our interest never wavers. Gularte, Williams sizzle ...delivering essential
gutsy performances."

Fool For Love
By Sam Shepard
Directed by Janis Stevens
March 22- April 27, 2008

"...Sam Shepard's purest and most beautiful play."
-NY Daily News

"It is as mysterious and unsettling - now you see it, now you don't - as spare and, incidentally, as funny as anything he has ever done."
-The New Yorker

From the Artistic Director

Why we love this play:
Playwright Sam Shepard is often called the “cowboy” of the American theatre. His plays seduce you with their bold and vivid themes and stay with you long after you’ve left the theatre. The relationship between May and Eddy is as intense and fascinating as any that has been written for the stage.

"...packs a powerful punch ... raw, gritty, violent, sexual, uncomfortable, in your face and under your skin. Williams and Gularte are explosive and mesmerizing, a talented duo daring us to watch their train wreck... a tour de force performance."
-Sacramento News and Review (Read the complete review

"...it's hard to take your eyes off this story - it's often funny, sometimes heartbreaking, always vivid."
-Capital Public Radio (Hear the full review)
A critical and popular success, this masterfully constructed work brings searing intensity and rare theatrical excitement to its probing, yet sharply humorous study of love, hate and the dying myths of the Old West told through the harrowing clash between long-time lovers, Eddy and May. In a run-down motel room at the edge of the Mojave Desert, Eddy works to convince May to run away with him to Wyoming. But having forced herself to move on after Eddy left her before, how can May trust him again?

A Number
Sacramento Premiere!
By Caryl Churchill
Directed by Stephanie Gularte
May 10 – June 22, 2008

“Churchill's magnificent new play only lasts an hour but contains more drama, and more ideas, than most writers manage in a dozen full-length works.”
-Daily Telegraph

”One of the most spell-binding theatrical events of the year..."
- The London Daily Telegraph

From the Artistic Director

Why we love this play:
Tony Kushner has called Caryl Churchill "the greatest living English language playwright."  A Number is yet another astonishing and unexpected turn from this living legend.  As I read it, I began to realize that this was much more than a topical sci-fi riff.  In an amazingly compact space of words, Churchill manages to layer penetrating and often quite funny observations about humanity.

On a routine doctor’s visit, Bernard receives some shocking news: he's been cloned. When he confronts his father, he finds out it's worse: he is just one in an unknown number of genetically identical sons. But is Bernard the original or a copy? Does it matter? And what's going to happen when two other versions come knocking at the door? Part psychological thriller, part topical scientific speculation, and part analysis of the relationship between fathers and their sons, A Number takes the ethical labyrinth of genetic engineering, and the timeless debate over nature versus nurture, and reconstitutes them as a bracing family drama.

The Typographer’s Dream
Sacramento Premiere!
By Adam Bock
July 12 – August 17, 2008

“… funny, provocative, psychologically revealing, intellectually stimulating and thoroughly enjoyable ….”
-SF Chronicle

“…a surprising and fascinating play that also manages to be exceptionally funny.”
-Curtain Up

From the Artistic Director

Why we love this play:
It's so fun to be surprised by a play.  Adam Bock is one of the most unique and lively playwrights I've come across and The Typographer's Dream is unlike anything else I've read.  You'll have to experience it to appreciate what I mean- but I predict Capital Stage audiences will love this final show of our 07-08 season.

Pause for a moment and contemplate your job. Is it important? Do you define it? Or have you let it define you? Is what you are who you really are or are you what you do? In this very funny, stylish play by hot new playwright, Adam Bock a typographer, a geographer, and a stenographer obsess over their professions, their identities, and Canada. Bock’s signature syncopation provides the rhythm for this hilarious story of borders, letters, fonts, and friendships.
