Guidelines
Capital Stage is particularly interested in plays that fulfill our mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to the region. Plays must be full-length in any genre: comedy, drama, musical, etc. Translations, collections of one-acts, children’s plays and any play that has received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading or non-professional production are still eligible. Only one submission per playwright is allowed each year. Playwrights in the Northern California region are encouraged to participate.
2009 Submission process
Step I: Submit a two-page maximum abstract of the play including title, character breakdown, brief story synopsis and playwright bio or resume. Also include 10 pages of consecutive sample dialogue. If submitting a musical, please include a CD of selections from the score. Literary agents may submit full scripts of their client’s work. All abstracts and dialogue samples will be read. From these submissions, selected manuscripts will be requested for Step II. Please do not send a manuscript with or instead of the abstract.
Step II: Based on Step I submissions, full manuscripts will be requested. Manuscripts should be neatly typed, securely bound and have the playwright’s name, contact address and phone number clearly visible on the front page.
Based on Step II manuscript submissions, four plays will be selected for inclusion in a series of staged readings to be held in February 2009. Playwrights included in these readings will be awarded $300. One of the plays from these readings will be considered for a fully-staged world premiere as part of Capital Stage’s 2009-10 season.
Submitted full-manuscripts, tapes and CDs, will be returned if a self-addressed, stamped envelope with adequate postage is provided. Electronic submissions will not be accepted at this time.
Final selections are made by Stephanie Gularte, Capital Stage Producing Artistic Director.
Submissions are accepted between July 14, 2008 – October 17, 2008 (postmarked).
