Capital Stage was founded as the Delta King Theatre in 1999. At that time, the company was a division of the for profit company Riverboat Delta King, and we continue to perform in the riverboat's intimate theatre space. We formed our company out of our passionate belief that live theatre provides, as Oscar Wilde put it, “…the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” Capital Stage explores the human condition in its relation to society and celebrates the participatory process of theatre as equal parts story, performer and live audience. We do this through the creation and interpretation of critically acclaimed and award-winning plays, as well as bold new works, that engage the mind and soul.

We became a professional, equity company in 2004 and by 2005, Capital Stage incorporated as an independent 501(c)3, increasing our capacity to stage innovative and thought-provoking productions and to become a leader in the growth of the performing arts in our region. We produce fully mounted plays with professional actors; perform lively staged readings; engage with community-based organizations; and seek diversity among our artists and our productions.

In 2006, after only one year of producing as the newly formed Capital Stage, the critics of the Sacramento News & Review voted us the “Best Professional Theatre” in the greater Sacramento region.  Our support base is growing rapidly, with new subscribers joining Capital Stage everyday, and with corporate funding coming from important community partners such as Washington Mutual, Downey Brand, Mark John Crews & Associates, Pillsbury Winthrop, and the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission.

In our 2007-08 season we will present a 6-show season that will include four Sacramento area premieres.  Throughout the season we will conduct staged-readings and workshops of new plays, with the intent of selecting one piece to include as a World Premiere in our 2008-09 season!
